How New Christians Can Celebrate the Sabbath (And Actually Enjoy It)

For many new Christians, the Sabbath can feel like a beautiful but unfamiliar concept. At its heart, it is simply a day set apart: a gift from God to rest, reflect, and reconnect with Him. You don't need a perfect routine or years of tradition behind you to observe it meaningfully. Starting small and being intentional is enough.
One of the simplest ways to honour the Sabbath is by stepping away from the busyness of the week. That might mean switching off work emails, putting your phone down for a few hours, or just slowing your pace. Rest isn't laziness. In Genesis, even God rested on the seventh day, and that rhythm was woven into creation for a reason. Giving yourself permission to stop is itself an act of worship.
Gathering with other believers is another wonderful way to mark the day. Whether that's attending a church service, joining a small group, or sharing a meal with Christian friends, there's something spiritually nourishing about being in community on the Sabbath. Hebrews 10:25 reminds us not to give up meeting together, and Sunday is a natural moment to honour that call.
Finally, consider filling the day with things that draw you closer to God. Reading scripture, journalling, taking a walk and praying, or listening to worship music are all good places to start. The Sabbath doesn't have to look the same every week and it certainly doesn't need to be rigid or rule-bound. Think of it less as a list of dos and don'ts and more as a weekly invitation to rest in God's presence and remember what truly matters.
Sabbath FAQs
Does the Sabbath have to be on a Sunday? Traditionally, Jewish observance places the Sabbath on Saturday, while most Christians worship on Sunday to mark the resurrection of Jesus. What matters most is the intention behind the day: setting time apart for God, whenever that falls for you.
Do I have to go to church to observe the Sabbath? Attending church is a meaningful part of Sabbath worship for many Christians, but it isn't the only way to honour the day. Personal prayer, scripture reading, and rest are all valid ways to observe the Sabbath, especially as you're finding your feet in faith.
How long should I observe the Sabbath? Traditionally the Sabbath runs from sundown to sundown, giving it a full 24 hours. As a new Christian though, even carving out a few intentional hours is a meaningful place to begin.
What if I have to work on the Sabbath? Many people can't avoid working on Sundays due to shift patterns or other commitments, and there's no need for guilt around this. Try designating another day or even a shorter window of time each week where you can rest, pray, and refocus on God.
